How To Promote Your Book

Create a Promotion Plan

Book promotion is not a one-off activity! It's a marathon, not a sprint. You just can't promote your book by trying to do all promotional activities in a couple of days - or even two weeks!

Book promotion is a series of activities directed towards a goal. Well, t's two goals, really - firstly to raise visibility of your book amongst your audience, then to sell more books.

You see, you're not going to sell any books if there is no desire in your prospect to buy. And there will be no desire if there is not interest. And certainly no interest if there's no awareness!

Think AIDA - Awareness, Interest, Desire, Action. You need to work on the A and I before you get the required desire and Action. All of this needs time - and a load of related sales messages.

What To Do Next

So first and foremost, you need a plan for your promotion activities. It needs the right level of resources committed to it. The person planning, managing and executing the activities may be the same person, or several people, depending on the scale of the task.

But create a plan first.

Get a Blog

One of the great things today is that you can be your own information publisher. Previous generations had to rely on media they did not control - the press, radio and TV. Today, anyone can be a publisher. You just need a blog.

WordPress is free - all you need is hosting to run it. Then you can publish text, audios, videos, podcasts - you name it. All for free. This is a level of possibility not even dreamed about by our parents' generation.

What To Do Next

So get a blog, and post extracts of your book to your blog. You already have all the content you need in your book. So now use it!

Use Social Media

Blogs and social media work well together. Your blog is your news and information source. Social media is your access to different, mainly free, promotional channels. You can even get WordPress plugins that make posting to social media easy.

Discover which social media sites your audience use most, and concentrate on those. But do choose a number of different sites to make sure you have good coverage.

What To Do Next

Post your blog extracts to social media to get wider visibility. Ask for engagement from your audience - request Likes, Shares and Comments.

Make Presentations

It's no coincidence that author and authority share the same root. As an author, you have credibility and authority. You can leverage this authority by making presentations.

Plan and deliver online and offline presentations to ensure you reach your target market. Go where your audience are - this may mean physical meetups, or forums online. Seek out your audience who want to hear your message.

Create your presentations based on what your marketing aim is - Attention, Interest, Desire or Action. And if you're not used to presenting, get some training and experience in creating and delivering them.

What To Do Next

Find where your audience is on and offline. Get in front of them and present! Just ensure that when you do, your presentation is relevant to them and is professional.

Media Interviews

Books open the doors to media interviews like nothing else.

Local radio, the press and even TV may be interested in interviewing you as a published author. Your published book is your ticket to these interviews. I've even heard one US writer who says he never got interviewed on air until he published - then the requests never stopped!

What To Do Next

So approach your local newspaper, magazines, radio and even TV stations for an interview. The response might surprise you.
